Parent Education Resources & Websites

Bethany Lutheran Church has worked with the following Bay Area organizations.  We have collaborated with them in the past when creating our parent education events.

Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.

We exist because our nation's children spend more time with media and digital activities than they do with their families or in school, which profoundly impacts their social, emotional, and physical development. As a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, we provide trustworthy information and tools, as well as an independent forum, so that families can have a choice and a voice about the media they consume.

Our reviews and tips are also available through our partnerships with Comcast, Cox and Time Warner Cable's Video-on-Demand, Yahoo!, DIRECTV.COM, Best Buy, Netflix, and others.

A parent’s recommendation:  “Common Sense Media is a “must” website for all parents and educators!  They provide advice for parents and resources for educators.  Read reviews and ratings on movies, games, websites, television programs, books, music, and mobile apps.  An e-newsletter with the current “hot” topics and reviews is also available!”

Common Ground is a coalition of Bay Area schools that have joined together to enhance parent education. The goal of the coalition is to provide opportunities for parents and educators to learn from experts in a variety of fields, to share ideas with others, and to support each other's efforts to enrich our local communities.

The Common Ground Speaker Series features dynamic speakers who are nationally recognized for their expertise in specific areas of parenting, education, and/or health. Each year, we strive to present a balanced series that addresses a wide array of issues confronting parents and educators.

All Common Ground Speaker Series events are free of charge to the parents, faculty and staff of our member schools. Guests from non-member schools are welcome to attend for a $20 fee at the door. Light refreshments are offered 30 minutes prior to the event and books are available for purchase.

Our staff and services make us the Bay Area's leading family resource center, providing a place for parents to get education and counsel about parenting and a place for children of all ages to find peer support, social networks, and guidance on their developmental journey.

In addition to a wide variety of parent-child play groups and expert consultation on parenting issues, we offer each month many dynamic workshops and presentations on timely topics, including praising children, overscheduling children, and positive discipline.

Striving for innovative, cutting-edge, and evidence-based services, we have taken the lead in developing highly effective programs that make a positive difference for many in the community. Among these programs are our bullying prevention workshops, based on the Steps to Respect model, that are geared for educators and parents, as well as our Family Ambassador Program, which trains resource specialists to work with low-income families with young children.

Palo Alto Council of

The Palo Alto PTA Council is dedicated to bringing parents and schools together for the good of all students. Their efforts are an indispensable element of our students' success.

Children’s Health

Children's Health Council helps children, teens and families find the best ways to learn, develop and thrive.

CHC's Educational Services division provides parent education through workshops and the Parent Resource Center as well as professional development training to hundreds of educators each year.  Since 1998, CHC has been a regional site for the Schools Attuned® program, which trains teachers to identify learning differences in children and to develop teaching strategies to foster academic success for all students.

CHC provides programs and services that are responsive to the needs of children and families in the Bay Area. In recognition of its 50 plus years of commitment to the community, the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce honored CHC in 2006 with the Tall Tree Award in the outstanding non-profit organization category.
